Up All Night- The Growing Prysocks

Jonah's 18 Month Post

Filed under: by: Stephanie

Baby Boy.  You're not such a baby anymore.  You're 18 months old and I can hardly believe it.  The time has absolutely flown by and your daddy and I are grateful for every second.  I'm a little bit in shock that you're working your way towards being a two-year-old.  For some reason, 17 months seems so much younger than 18.

Honestly, I have lost track of all the words you know.  You're vocabulary is exploding lately and it's been hard to keep up! This month some of the words you've add have been bug {buggy}, sock {sock-uh}, puzzle {puh-zel}, pants {pents}, wow, boom, shirt {shert}, walk, go, nap, bed, upside down {uh-down}, hot {aught}, Eww, camel {camo}, and elephant {el-pant or ep-ent}. I'm 100% certain I'm forgetting a ton of words. If I had to guess I would say that you know upwards of 60 or 70 words {unprompted.  you parrot 99% of things Daddy and I say}.  And you're adding more every day.

You also know the names of lots of different body parts. You can say and point to: nose {your favorite to say and point out}, mouth, hair, foot, hand, and tummy.  You know ears and eyes but sometimes get them confused.

You have eight teeth now.   And you're wearing mostly size 18 clothes.  Some of them are starting to seem a little short around the arms and legs, however.  Maybe you'll be going up a size soon.

You know so many animal sounds now. Cows, monkeys, chickens, sheep, dogs and sometimes horses and pigs. It's adorable and you get so excited when you get to say them. You think the monkey and chicken sound are hilarious and it's so fun to see you giggle each time you say them.

You love playing with all your cars and trucks.  You make lots of sounds for them too {"nun-nun nun" when they go; "boom" when they crash; "ERRR!" when they stop}

You're giving lots of hugs and kisses lately. A lot of the time we ask for them, but you also give them unprompted frequently and it's precious. It makes my heart very happy.

You're also learning how to combine words to make phrases! This month, we've hear you say "there she is", "up, please", "all done", "Where's Beesly/ball/Elmo/frog", "Elmo, please", "there's Mama/Beesly/Daddy" and several more that I'm forgetting. It blows me away each time you do it.

You've been walking for several months now and are practically running these days.  It still amazes me when I stop and think that not too long ago, you were completely immobile.  You keep me moving and it's great {and some times, wonderfully tiring}.

You know how to put all of your puzzles together, too.  You get excited each time you put a piece in its correct place {you always clap and say "yay!"}. You got a few puzzles for Christmas that are supposed to be for 2+ and I wasn't sure you could handle them; you proved me completely wrong and had them mastered in just a few minutes.

You also know the names of LOTS of people that you see on a regular basis {Mama, Daddy, Pappa, Gee, Josh, Matt and Jadyn are all names you know without prompting.}

You're learning how to use your utensils better and better. I have been okay with you using your hands for a long time, so you were pretty content to skip the spoons.  But you've noticed us using them lately and like to have your fork and spoon as well.  Sometimes you still throw them aside and dive in with your hands, but you're improving dramatically.

You still love to help around the house.  You'll help with laundry by dumping in the detergent or throwing clothes into the dryer.  You also like to be the one to feed Beesly every day. You're such a sweet helper!

Things Jonah Loves at 18 Months
Puzzles
Books {Farmer Grover, Big Bird Can Share, and your illustrated Bible are some of your favorites}
Going for Walks
Elmo
Bathtime {especially the toys}
Beesly {you love taking her on walks around the house, giving her hugs and petting her}

Mastered Skills (most kids can do)
•  Will “read” board books on his own - yep! You've been doing this for months and months.  I think I have pictures of you "reading" before you were even a year old.
•   Scribbles well - I suppose.  You still like to munch on crayons, so we don't try often.  But you scribble when you have a chance.
Emerging Skills (half of kids can do)
• Strings two words together in phrases - Oh yes.
• Brushes teeth with help - you LOVE to brush your teeth.  Especially if Mama is brushing her teeth at the same time.
•  Stacks four blocks - So specific.  But, yes.  You can.
Advanced Skills (a few kids can do)
•  Throws ball overhand - Yep! You've been doing this since you were 12 months old.
•  Takes toys apart and puts them back together - Yes.
•  Shows signs of toilet training readiness - You've been telling us "diaper" when you need a new one for a couple of months. I suppose that counts?

Jonah. Words seem so inadequate.  You came into our world 18 months ago and completely changed our lives.  I could never begin to put into words how much we love you.  You are a blessing and brighten our lives in immeasurable ways.  You're so inquisitive and smart that it blows my mind sometimes.  You're also silly and sweet and I love learning more and more about your sense of humor.  You're so active. All the time.  It keeps me on my toes and I'm grateful for it. You are amazing.  And the most incredible gift I could ever receive.  Your daddy and I are frequently humbled that God entrusted you to us.  We pray that He would guide and protect you and that you would love Him all the days of your life.
