Up All Night- The Growing Prysocks

Jonah's 17 Month Post

I'm having a hard time believing you're really 17 months old, Little Man.  Time has gone by so fast and I'm constantly amazed that you're no longer my baby but a sweet toddler instead.

This has been an interesting month for us. You were sick for most of it, which broke me and your daddy's hearts. You were diagnosed with Hand, Foot and Mouth AND a sinus infection this month. It meant extra snuggle time with Mama most days. But I know you felt miserable and it showed a few times through grumpiness and temper tantrums. You seem to be feeling much better and we're so glad.  We're hoping for a completely healthy December!

This month also market your second Thanksgiving ever! We hosted Thanksgiving at our house this year and your Grandma and Grandpa Thompson came down from Mississippi to attend.  Your Great-Grandma and Papaw as well as your Great-Aunt Linda came too. It was so much fun having them here and you loved all the attention.  You were quiet the little performer that day: you danced around for everyone and played so sweetly.

You added several new words to your vocabulary this month: blanket {bankie}, medicine {med-sin}, Jesus {geez}, cow {ow}, diaper {dah-pur}, bear {bay-er}, sheep {eep}, bat, cake {cack}, as well as Elmo {yah-yah}, Grover {go-ger} and Count {dat}--{clearly lots of sick time meant a LOT of Sesame Street for awhile}.  You're starting to say some of your words more clearly, too. For example, Beesly has moved from "bee" to "bee-zee and Daddy is "Dad-ee" instead of "Da-da."  You've even said two word sentences several time! You've said "Up, Mama" and Up, please" on a few different occasions.

You are quite the mimic lately, as well.  You try and say everything that we do and, as a result, also say things like rats {wats}, trash, and yucky {ucky}.  But only if we say it first.

As I said last month, you stopped nursing in October. Our bedtime routine has changed a little as a result.  We do dinner, bath and then as a family we read a Bible story {right now it's Advent using your Jesus Storybook Bible} and then your two normal bedtime books {On The Night You Were Born and The Going To Bed Book}. Then we say a prayer and you snuggle with me while I rock you for a few minutes before bed.  I think you've needed it since you've been sick lately and I love one last cuddle session with you before bed.

You get so excited when Daddy gets home these days and I love to watch.  We'll be playing and as soon as you hear the garage door, you make a bee-line to where Daddy always miraculously appears.  Sometimes he even takes you to go get the mail, which you love.  You like holding the mail key {and sometimes don't want to give them back!} and love looking at the leaves and acorns along the way.

You also still love to read.  Your favorites lately are The Haunted Ghoul Bus and your Jesus Storybook Bible.  You bring us your Bible several times a day to "read."  You don't quite have the patience to last through an entire story yet, so we usually look at the pictures and tell the stories as abbreviated as we can.  I love how much you love it and I pray that it's evidence of God calling you to Him.

You're wearing size 18 month clothes, mostly.  A few 12 month clothes still fit but are getting a little snug. You also have a few teeth still working their way through: seven total, I think {you really don't like us checking!}.

You also have started saying "diaper" a lot lately.  We're not sure if it always means you need a new diaper, but we always treat it like it does {usually you actually do need to be changed}.  Hopefully that will help with potty training later on!

Mastered Skills (most kids can do)
•  Uses six words regularly - Oh yes.
•  Enjoys pretend games - He thinks it's funny when Mama pretends. Does that count?
•  Likes riding toys - Yes.
Emerging Skills (half of kids can do)
• Feeds doll - You don't really have any dolls.  But you have fed your Elmo and Count toys at least once. Mostly, though, you like to give your toys kisses!
• Speaks more clearly - Yes
•  Throws a ball underhanded - No. But he's been throwing overhand since he was 12 months
Advanced Skills (a few kids can do)
•  Dances to music - All. The. Time.
•  Sorts toys by color, shape, or size - No. But you did just start making matches with your Leap Frog Fridge Farm set.
•  Kicks a ball forward - Sometimes. We don't have a lot of those types of toys around, so you don't have as much of an opportunity.

Jonah, we love you so very much.  Your daddy and I are still so blown away that God trusted us with You.  You're a joy. You have such a fun sense of humor and love to laugh.  Daddy and I will do just about anything to hear you giggle and it always makes our day.  You are more and more inquisitive every day and we cannot wait to see how God uses that to glorify His Kingdom.  You're persistent and sweet and rambunctious and loving.
And we love you more than we could ever put in to words.

Jonah's 16 Month Post

16 Months.

Wow.

This has been a pretty eventful month for you, Jonah Matthew.

I've almost given up writing what sizes of clothes you wear because it doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me. But, for posterity: All of your summer clothes are 12 months and still fit great.  All of your winter clothes are 18 months and, while some are a little long, they fit as well.

You've gotten several new teeth! A few weeks ago I noticed two of your upper teeth coming in on each side.  I think they're your first molars, but some have said it's way to early.  So I guess it could be your canines? Anyway, I think they're giving you a lot of trouble as they make their way in because you've had some trouble sleeping lately  Once they're in you'll have a grand total of seven teeth!

On October 4th, you started walking! It happened so suddenly and it absolutely amazed me and Daddy. You hardly ever crawl anymore and you're seem to love this new independence.  You love rearranging any furniture you can move and walking around showing us your toys.

You also decided that you were done nursing and weaned this month.  It's been a gradual thing and I knew that it was coming. I'm proud of how grown up you are but sad that my sweet baby isn't really a baby anymore.

Additionally, you went from two naps to one this month. Before we made the transition, you would nap great in the morning but not at all in the afternoon. Late afternoons and evenings were a really tough time for you.  We switched you over a couple of weeks ago and you've been napping beautifully in the afternoon. By the time your nap-time rolls around, you're so very ready {and you've even fallen asleep in my lap before nap-time twice!}.

You're still such a sweet little man.  Even though we're done nursing, you like to cuddle with me for a few minutes before bed every night.  You love to give hugs, kisses, high fives and fist bumps. You also like to bring different toys to Daddy and I to kiss.  You'll even try to get Beesly to kiss them too.

You still love watching Elmo and ask for it daily {by singing "ya ya ya ya": Elmo's World's theme song}. We don't watch it every day, but it's fun to see you get so excited about it.

We tried coloring this month as well and you seemed to love it! Foolishly, I didn't use washable markers, so your efforts were visible on your skin for a few days.  But you had a blast and I didn't mind the mess.  I've already got some toddler friendly art supplies ready to go for Christmas.

As always, you're talking up a storm. Here are all the new words you added to your vocabulary this month: church, duck, up, amen, yummy {nummy}, pumpkin {puh-kin}, Papa {paw-paw}, Grammy {Gee}, baby, messy {mess}, rice, robot {ro-ro or bot}, nose {nuz}, mouth {mouf}, and bye guys. That means you have about 30 words under your belt. Good job, Buddy!

Things Jonah Loves at Sixteen Months:
Elmo
Daddy
Walking to get the mail
Picking up acorns
Using words you know
Beesly
Giving kisses
Reading books {Favorites include "The Haunted Ghoul Bus" and "Count My Blessings"}
FaceTime with anyone

Mastered Skills (most kids can do)
•  Turns the pages of a book: Yes. All the time.  Books are still a pretty big hit with you.
•  Has a temper tantrum when frustrated: Sadly, yes.  Kind of love that this is considered a "Mastered Skill"
•  Becomes attached to a soft toy or other object: Not really. There are a lot of toys you like, but no "loveys" yet.
Emerging Skills (half of kids can do)
• Discovers the joy of climbing: Yes.  Oh gosh.  You LOVE to climb on the fireplace {so dangerous}, which is NOT allowed.  But you're so excited whenever you get up there.  You have climbed up on the couches a few times, too.
• Stacks three blocks: Yes
•  Uses spoon or fork: Yes. Not well, but yes.
•  Learns the correct way to use common objects (e.g., the telephone): Yep. Telephone and remote control. It's pretty adorable.
Advanced Skills (a few kids can do)
•  Takes off one piece of clothing by himself: Do socks count? If so, yes.
•  Gets finicky about food: Not really. but you do prefer variety. If you get the same thing over and over, you get a little grumpy
•  Switches from two naps to one: We just transitioned you a few weeks ago.  So far, so good. {Although Mama misses those morning naps a little}

Jonah, we love you so much.  You're such a sweet boy and we're so blessed by you.  Several times a day your daddy and I look at each other and marvel that we have you.  You were and are an answered prayer and we're so thankful that God entrusted you to us.  We pray every day for wisdom, grace, patience so that we can raise you to love Jesus.  We pray that this world never crushes your sweet spirit and that you will always know much we adore you.

Walking!

On October 4th, just ONE day after his 15th month "birthday", Jonah started walking.

I needed to get a few things done, so I let him play with my keys.  I heard his jabbering away, throwing the keys and then picking them up. I turned around to watch, and saw him try to walk. Immediately, I dropped what I was doing to pay attention. After just a few minutes, he was walking!  He would throw the keys far away, walk to go get them, and then repeat the process all over again.

For awhile, he was crab-walking a lot.  He couldn't really control what direction he wanted to go for very long, so there was a lot of turning in circles and side-stepping.  But after just a day, he had it down cold.

He's hardly crawling at all anymore {which I miss a little}.  He's walking and loving the independence. We're so proud of him!

Below are a few videos.  They aren't the greatest quality because it's really difficult to take a good video while you're watching in AMAZEMENT that your little baby is walking around like it's no big deal {and trying to make sure he doesn't careen into the pointy fireplace or face plant on the hard, wooden floors}. However, we did the best we could.
 Enjoy!

It’s so hard for me to think that you’re already 15 months.  I think back to this time last year when you were so new and tiny and I couldn’t even begin to imagine how blessed our lives were going to be through you.

You are amazing, Jonah Matthew, and we are so grateful for you.

This month has been a really busy one for our family.  We’ve had many friends come and stay, we decided to lead a small group in our home, and we have continued to get settled at our new place. You’ve taken all these new, little things as wonderfully as you always do.  You’re typically really easy-going, energetic, and ready for new things.

Another tooth broke through this month: a top tooth on the left-hand side.  It must have been giving you a lot of trouble, because you almost immediately slept better once it appeared.  We love seeing your new, toothy smile

On September 8th, you took two steps all by yourself! And on September 30th, you upped that to three!  You’re still not walking yet, but I know you can.  You’re extremely fast when you crawl, so walking doesn’t hold much appeal right now.  However, you’re getting more and more energetic, so I imagine it’s only a matter of time before you decide to give it a shot.

We’ve started to allow you a little bit of screen time lately.  On days your daddy doesn’t get home until 8:30, I have been letting you watch a little Sesame Street while I get our dinner ready.  You weren’t too impressed with it at first, but now you really like it.  You shake with excitement every time it comes on. And you always dance to the Elmo’s World theme song.

You have increased your vocabulary a little: ball, book {buh}, done {duh}, more {mo}, fish {bish}, beesly {bee-zee, or bee}, mama, dada, wiggle, bus, please {peas},  bird {bur}, uh oh {uh!}, bye {which sounds adorably southern} and no.  You’re working on messy, baby, Grammy, duck, and truck but haven’t quite figured them out yet.  You also know the animal sounds for dogs and cows.

You're an extremely physical little boy.  You frequently give headbutts and have been known to hit {we're working on it}.  Sometimes, I think it's your way of showing affection.  This month you also learned to blow kisses {so adorable: thanks Sam!} and you sometimes even give real kisses.  It's been nice to redirect your more physical means of affection into something sweeter.  You’ve been giving hugs lately too, and it melts our hearts every time.

You still love books.  We recently added all your books to the bottom of one of our bookshelves, and every day you pull them out and flip through each one.  Some of your favorites right now are I Spy in the Ocean, What’s Your Sound Hound the Hound, Count My Blessings and Jesus Loves Me

Thing Jonah Loves at 15 Months
Fish
Beesly
Toy cars
Taking walks
Pointing out birds
Books
Throwing toys for Beesly
Elmo

Mastered Skills (most kids can do)
•  Play with ball — Yes!
•  Uses three words regularly — Yes, more than three.
•  Walks backwards — If you’re holding on to your push toy or one of our hands, yes. Not by yourself.
Emerging Skills (half of kids can do)
•  Scribbles with a crayon — We actually haven’t been using crayons, but you have scribbled with markers and pens. You still try and eat them half the time though, so we don’t use them often.
•  Runs — Behind your push toys, but not independently
•  Adopts “no” as his new favorite word — Kind of? You say “no” a lot, but not necessarily in reaction to something. Maybe you like how it sounds?
Advanced Skills (a few kids can do)
•  ”Helps” around the house — I say yes! You hand me things when I ask for them and will wipe things if I give you a rag.  You put things away when I ask and regularly help me load the dryer.
•  Puts his fingers to his mouth and says “shhh” — Not regularly, but you’re starting to attempt it.

Jonah, you are a joy.  You brighten our lives with you sweet smile and wonderful giggles.  You’re so rambunctious, talkative, inquisitive and loving and we absolutely adore you.  You love Daddy, Beesly, and I so much and your favorite thing is to be playing with one of us. You love to curl up in our laps to read and think Beesly is the most hilarious dog ever. We are enormously blessed to have you in our lives. We are constantly amazed by you and that God would bless us so richly with you.
We love you deeply, Little Man.

Jonah's 14 Month Post

This has been an amazing month.  I think I say that every month, but you are growing so much.  Those things that signify your babyhood are slowly fading away and your little toddler self is emerging. It’s so fun to watch.

You’re so very close to walking.  We noticed how much you loved pushing your walking toys, so we started giving you opportunities to practice with us.  You love walking around holding our hands and you’re getting so fast! You can stand 100% by yourself and every time you do I expect you to just start running.  I know it’s going to be happening soon and you’ll love it!

You have been such a little ham lately.  Whenever we say “yummy” you say it back and start wiggling around like crazy in your highchair while we laugh.  You also say “wiggle wiggle wiggle” and do the same thing.  So adorable.  You love to make us laugh.

You say so many words, Buddy: ball, book {buh}, done {duh}, more {mo}, fish {bish}, beesly {bee-zee, or bee}, mama, dada, wiggle, bus, please {peas}, and bird {bur}.

You haven’t been signing as much lately because you’re speaking more and more, but you still sign  “book,” “all done” and “water” {which basically means anything to drink}.

You don’t have any new teeth yet, but several more are on their way. It seems like they are all coming in at once. I know they are causing you pain and I can’t wait for you to have some relief!

You love music. You like to play piano with Mama and listen to music as a family.  If you really like what we’re playing, you’ll start wiggling and bobbing your head along with the music.  You really didn’t have a choice but to like music in this family and it’s fun to see you reacting to good music already.

We visited Grammy and Pappa York’s house this month and you visited your first aquarium and fell in LOVE with the fish there.  We bought you a fish book and it’s probably your favorite thing in the world right now.  Whenever we flip through it, you make sure to point out every single fish on each page.   We also saved a pamphlet from out visit and let you look at it whenever we drive somewhere.  It keeps you entertained for awhile and it’s pretty stinkin’ cute to glance back at you and see you holding up a pamphlet and “reading” through it {pointing out all the fish}.

Mastered Skills (most kids can do)

• Eats with fingers — Oh my. Yes!
• Empties containers of contents — Yes. You love to empty any container you can get your hands on: toy bins, drawers, etc.
• Imitates others — Yup. Sounds, facial expressions and body movements.

Emerging Skills (half of kids can do)

• Toddles well — You toddle around holding on to one of my fingers like a champ.  Not independently yet.
• Initiates games — You love rolling a ball to me or Daddy and you start that game frequently.
• Points to one body part when asked — Yes. But so far only belly button and nose.
• Responds to instructions (e.g., “give me a kiss”) — Yes. You'll give me a hug when I ask for one and you will hand me things if I ask.

Advanced Skills (a few kids can do)

• Uses a spoon or fork — Yes! You started doing this recently. Love it.
• Matches lids with appropriate containers — I haven't tried. But I would say probably not.
• Pushes and pulls toys while walking — Oh gosh. So much yes.  You're a PRO at pushing toys while you walk.

Things Jonah Loves at Fourteen Months:

fish everything! Books, pictures, the real thing. Anything fish
books
toy cars
his sandbox
playing with the water hose
running behind his push toys
using ANYTHING to walk around the house: he pushes pillows, empty boxes, toys, whatever
dancing
Daddy {you light UP when he comes home from work}
Mama
Beesly {she comes into your room every morning and you say "bee!" every time.}

Jonah, we love you so very much.  Every night your Daddy and I talk about how blessed we are to have you.  You are precious and wonderful. You're silly and smart and dramatic and hilarious.  You love to laugh and love to make others laugh.  You're growing up so fast and it's amazing to watch.  We continue to pray that Christ will be the most important thing in your life.  We pray that you are characterized by a love for Him and as God for the wisdom and strength to lead you there.  And Buddy, we pray that you always, always, always know how loved you are.

Born to be a Wildcat

Filed under: , by: David and Stephanie

Abilene Christian University has a special place in our hearts.  We went to college there and met there, after all.  When Jonah was born, we notified the alumni department and they sent us this sweet little onesie that says "Born to be a Wildcat."* {we're not special.  all the littles get one.}

It was too big for our little man until recently, but once it fit I made sure to snap some pictures of him.  There is a special section in the ACU Today magazine where parents send in pictures of their cuties.  I'm sure we'll submit one.  But there is no guarantee that Jonah will be chosen. And, honestly, I took a lot of photos.  Because seriously.  Too. Much. Cuteness.

Enjoy.

Love. This. Face.

Oh gosh. So sweet.

Jonah rapping.  Thoughts on his stage name?

Chatting

Jonah saying "mo" and signing.

* Jonah, wearing this onesie in no way commits you to attending university at ACU. You go where you wanna, Buddy.

Jonah's 13 Month Post

Jonah:

You are still changing each and every day and we love watching it all happen.  This was a fun month for you.  You had your first birthday party and had your first taste of cake. You moved to a new house and have your own playroom. You had your first taste of cows milk {and are a pretty big fan} and have started weaning. You played in a sandbox for the first time and absolutely adore graham crackers.

You’re such a little boy.

You are talking up a STORM lately and it’s pretty adorable.  You say the following words pretty well and pretty often: Mama, Dada, more {mo}, Beesly {buh-zee}, book {buh}, and all done {ah duh}, bus {ba}, and uh oh {uh}.  Less frequently {and less clearly} you say “ball {ba—I know it looks similar to ‘bus,’ but you can tell the difference, really}, and dog {dah}. In addition to all THOSE words, you just jabber all the time. You always seem to have something to say and I love it.

You also love mimicking lately, which seems to help with the talking.  You like mimicking sounds and words we make as well as funny faces.  You're pointing at things, waving and giving high fives {which your Daddy loves}.

Your signing is amazing lately too!  I'm so glad it's something we started with you because I love being able to communicate so early.  The signs you can sign back are more, book, eat, and water. On top of that, you understand milk and all done.

We’ve put our “no screen time” rule on hold this month for the Olympics and you are completely enthralled with it.  If something sporty is on, you’re all about it. It seems like swimming and cycling have been your favorite to watch.  Soak it all up Buddy, because as soon as those closing ceremonies start it’s back to media black-out.

You got lots of fun new toys for your birthday and it’s been a blast seeing you learn so many new things.  You love to play with cars {and even say “nun-nun-nun” whenever they’re moving around!} and love your puzzles too.  You’ve managed to learn how they work so well!  You also still love your stacking toys {cups and rings} and are a PRO at getting them together quickly.  It actually shocks me how fast you finish them these days.

You’re crawling around so dang fast now.  As a result you’re so not interested in walking.  I try practicing with you and your promptly sit back down and crawl instead.  However, you do like playing with your new push toys, so maybe it isn’t as far off as we think.  As always, take your time.  I know you’ll walk when you’re ready.

At your 12 month appointment a few weeks ago, here were your stats: Height- 31 in. {85%}; Weight- 21 lbs 8 oz. {30%}; Head Circumference-46 cm {25%}.  The doctor said it looks like you'll be tall and lean and guesses that, if you continue to grow as you have been, you'll be over 6 feet tall. You’re wearing 12 month clothes pretty exclusively but they’re already getting a little short for you.  We’ll be moving up to a new size pretty soon, I bet!

Things Jonah Loves at 13 Months
Chasing Mama or Daddy around the room
Playing “Where’s Jonah”
Chasing Beesly
Eating
Reading books
Turning lights on and off
Mimicking
Talking

Here's where you are compared to other kids your age:
Mastered Skills (most kids can do)
• Uses two words skillfully — Yes.
• Bends over and picks up an object — Yep.
Emerging Skills (half of kids can do)
• Enjoys gazing at his reflection — Oh yes.  You always smile and make fun faces when you see that handsome baby in the mirror
• Holds out an arm or leg to help you dress him — Yes. You’ve been doing this for a few months and it’s so helpful.
Advanced Skills (a few kids can do)
• Combines words and gestures to make needs known — Yes.  You're signing a ton lately.
• Rolls a ball back and forth — Yes. You love to do this with us.  You also like rolling your toy cars back and forth AND you learned how to throw a ball this month {Much to your -and Beesly's- delight}.

Jonah, each day you amaze us.  You are such a joy.  You are wonderful and silly and love to laugh. It's so wonderful seeing your personality emerging--especially when we think about how just one year ago you were so tiny and such a mystery to us.  You are a blessing.  And we love you so dearly. We thank God so much for entrusting you to us and we pray that you will love him deeply all of your life.

Birthday!

After celebrating Jonah's first birthday before the big move, we got all of our family together on the Sunday after. This gave us some time to get the house in better condition for the big event.

Steve and Papaw (David's grandad) chat it up over the smash cake.

Everyone milling around before things get started. This is a good view of the back half of the living area.

All eyes on the birthday boy.

I don't think he's quite prepared for all of this attention.

David's Grandma and Aunt Linda check out the scrapbook that Steph has been slaving over. Clearly it is a work of art.

And here comes the smash cake!!! He's bracing himself...

He is confused. He has literally never been presented with so much sugar on his tray.

His first taste is a little tentative.

Further investigation...

Momma helps out to get a little deeper into yummy goodness.

He's giving it a try..

His initial reaction was not so great.

...but it quickly grew on him and he started digging in.

Oh yeah.

This is where things got really messy and he really dug in.

Memaw gets Grandpa Elihue in the action through FaceTime.

Papaw and Jonah hanging out.

Jonah and Aunt Linda get to work on opening some presents!

He couldn't really read his birthday cards, but he seemed to appreciate them anyway.

You can see he's already broken in a puzzle piece with some drool.

It was a huge blessing to have all of our families together to celebrate Jonah's birthday. He is a very blessed little boy to have the love and support of so many family members. Thank you to everyone who came to share in this special day!
