I was productive today! Granted, I didn't roll out of bed until 11, but still! The ongoing saga of our car problems is coming to a close, thanks to my productivity. The short version is this: Steph's car sat during both rounds of the snowpocalypse, David's car's registration expired, had to get new battery for Steph's car after sitting for two months, David's car sat for two months without being run while the registration was being worked out, David's battery died as well. My productivity for the day was to call AAA to come out and fix the battery on my car. It turns out it was in bad shape and needed to be replaced, but whatever, it's fixed. Now we have two running cars! And they're legally licensed and registered in Virginia!
.......and it only took 8 months!!!
The delay is mostly my fault, but the Virginia Department of Transportation is unusually difficult, so they get a little of the blame. This whole car registration thing has been one of the most frustrating and unexpected parts of moving to a new place. Basically, being an adult is hard.
Today's movie that arrived from Netflix is 1408. I don't think this was very popular in theaters when it came out. I chose this one because it's based on a Stephen King short story. I have recently become enamored with Stephen King's works after reading The Dark Tower series on audiobook. He's known mainly for creepy/scary stories, and most of his books are indeed in that genre although he's written other non-horror stories as well. But I like his stuff because it's just so darn well written. His characters are always interesting and engaging and he has such a crazy vivid imagination.
I finished 1408 on audiobook about a week ago and it was a weird little horror story. The movie stars John Cusack, Samuel L. Jackson and Tony Shaloub. I don't know what's changed for the movie, but the book was about a writer to visits supposedly haunted places. He's never actually experience anything supernatural, but his writings about his experiences have done very well. He seeks out room 1408 at the Dolphin Hotel which has been the site of many suicides and strange deaths. The owner doesn't let people stay in the room and he only allows maids in to the room to clean it for 10 minutes at a time once a month. The owner tries to talk the writer out of it, but he can't be dissuaded. From there, a lot of freaky crazy stuff goes down in that room.
As I mentioned in a previous post, I used to be really into horror movies. I went through a phase where I watched the gore/slasher movies like Urban Legend and the Scream movies (by the way, they're making Scream 4, which I'm somewhat ashamed to admit that I'm a little excited about). But I mostly like the creepy psychological stuff, like The Ring and The Grudge. So 1408 looks like it will be my kind of thing.
However, I have not been watching scary movies very much lately, partly because Steph can't sleep well afterwards, and sometimes I can't either. I have wisely chosen to watch 1408 during the day. Being home alone will not help my chances of sleeping if I also try to watch this after dark. I'll tell you how it turned out tomorrow.
Song of the day: "Bat out of Hell" by Meat Loaf because it was stuck in my head this morning.
